Recipe Background
Apple Pie Bread Pudding combines cinnamon, apples, and buttery bread for a cozy, custardy dessert.
Apple Pie Bread Pudding is like a cozy kitchen hug, bringing together the warmth of cinnamon with the subtle sweetness of apples. As it bakes, your home fills with the inviting scent of cinnamon and butter—a sort of culinary nostalgia. The bread soaks up the rich custard, transforming hamburger buns into a custardy delight with just the right amount of crisp edges. It's a clever use of everyday ingredients, turning the ordinary into something special.
Each bite offers a delightful mix of soft, spongy bread and tender apples. The beauty is in layering and pressing the bread cubes down into the egg mixture to ensure every bit is flavorful and moist. The combination of textures keeps things interesting, contrasting nicely with the gentle crunch on top. It's a dessert that feels both classic and fresh—like apple pie, but with a twist.
Perfect for gatherings, it’s the kind of dish that brings people together. Drizzling the warm maple-cream sauce over the top? That’s the crowning glory and adds a velvety richness. Serve it warm and watch as friends and family dive in, sharing smiles and compliments as they savor each spoonful. This dish doesn’t just feed the appetite; it feeds the soul and sparks conversation around the table.
Ingredients
For the bread pudding:
- 2 cups milk
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 stick unsalted butter melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 medium apples peeled and sliced
- 10 regular-sized hamburger buns and/or hot dog buns cut into cubes
For the sauce:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 stick unsalted butter melted
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon maple extract plus more, to taste
- salt to taste
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Then lightly grease a 9x11-inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl combine the 1 1/2 cups of the sugar, the milk, and the eggs, whisking together until smooth.
- Add the vanilla extract, 1 stick of the melted butter, 1/2 teaspoon of the kosher salt, and the cinnamon and mix to combine.
- Add half of the bread cubes to the egg mixture and press them down until submerged. Then, add the other half of the bread cubes, gently pressing down to lightly moisten.
- Spoon half of the moistened bread cubes into the prepared pan, then top with half of the apple slices.
- Repeat this layering with the remaining bread cubes and the remaining apple slices.
- Place the pan in the oven and bake for 1 hour until the bread pudding is slightly crispy on the top and lightly browned.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the remaining sugar, the heavy cream, the remaining melted butter, 1/2 teaspoon of the maple extract, and the remaining salt.
- Bring the sauce mixture to a boil, then reduce to medium-low heat. For 5-10 minutes, allow the sauce to gently boil until reduced slightly.
- Taste and adjust with the extra maple extract and the salt as desired.
- Remove the bread pudding from the oven and drizzle it with the maple-cream sauce.
- Serve warm!
