Recipe Background

Tater Tot Surprise combines crunchy tots with creamy cheese, jalapeños, and chicken for a layered comfort dish.
Who knew a frozen bag of tater tots could be the foundation for such an unexpected delight? Tater Tot Surprise is all about layers of comfort and a subtle kick. Imagine the crispy potato bites resting under a creamy blend packed with jalapeños, bacon, and chicken. The aromas will have you anticipating that first bite, where the cool, sour cream mingles with the warmth of melted cheese and spices.
It’s the texture contrast that keeps you coming back. Crunchy tater tots and creamy cheese filling play off each other brilliantly. A bit of technique goes a long way here—ensure you let the baked dish rest for five minutes after leaving the oven. This pause helps everything set, making each slice tidy and perfect for serving.
Sharing this dish with friends or family turns a regular dinner into a memorable affair. The jalapeños add just the right amount of edge without overwhelming, and the sprinkle of fresh green onions adds a fresh finish. It’s a dish that encourages seconds, if not thirds, with the lovely balance of familiar textures and flavors working in harmony.

Ingredients

  • 1 (32-ounce) bag frozen tater tots
  • 2 (8-ounce) blocks cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups Mexican-blend cheese shredded, divided
  • 6 green onions sliced, divided
  • 6 jalapeños seeds and veins removed, diced
  • 1 1/2 cups bacon cooked and crumbled, divided
  • 1 rotisserie chicken diced into chunks

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Evenly add the tater tots into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  • Bake the tater tots, about 15 minutes.
  • While the tater tots are cooking, in a medium bowl, add the cream cheese and the sour cream and stir to combine.
  • Add the garlic salt, the pepper, 1/2 of the cheese, 1/2 of the green onions, the jalapeños, and 1/2 of the crumbled bacon to the cream cheese mixture and stir until it is well-combined.
  • Transfer the baking dish to a wire rack and evenly sprinkle the tater tots with the chicken pieces.
  • Evenly spread the cream cheese mixture over the chicken layer, then evenly sprinkle with the remaining bacon crumbles and the remaining shredded cheese.
  • Transfer the baking dish to the oven and bake the chicken mixture until the cream cheese mixture is heated through and the cheese is melted, about 20 minutes.
  • Transfer the baking dish to a wire rack and let it cool, about 5 minutes.
  • Garnish with the remaining green onions and serve.
