Recipe Background

Heaven-on-Earth Cake layers cherry, vanilla, and angel cake blissfully.
This cake layers soft, airy clouds of angel food cake with luscious ribbons of cherry pie filling. Each forkful delivers a gentle sweetness, punctuated by a tangy burst from the cherries. The vanilla pudding ties everything together with its smooth, creamy texture. Cut your cake with a serrated knife for neat, uniform cubes—this helps soak up every bit of flavor.
Assembling this cake feels like painting with dessert. The subtle vanilla aroma mingles with cherries, wafting through the kitchen. A topping of imitation whipped cream adds a light, fluffy touch, while the optional sliced almonds offer a slight crunch if you'd like a textural contrast. Chill it long enough, and those layers meld together beautifully.
Sharing this dessert is a delight. It's perfect for moments when you need an easy, crowd-pleasing dish that requires little time but delivers happiness in every bite. Bright with color and bold in taste, you’ll find it hard to resist going back for seconds.

Ingredients

  • 1 angel cake store-bought, or made from a 15 or 16-ounce angel food cake box mix, baked and cooled
  • 1 (18-ounce) can cherry pie filling
  • 1 (3.6-ounce) package 4-serving instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 1/2 cups 2% milk
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 8 ounces imitation whipped topping
  • almonds optional, to taste, sliced, for garnish

Directions

  • Cut the cooled angel food cake with a serrated knife into cubes, about 1-inch in size.
  • Layer 1/2 of the cake pieces evenly in the bottom of a 9x9-inch cake pan.
  • Spread 2/3 of the cherry pie filling over the cake layer.
  • Layer the remaining cake cubes over the cherry filling layer.
  • In a medium bowl, stir the pudding mix, the milk, and the sour cream together until smooth.
  • Spread the pudding mixture evenly over the cake.
  • Spread the imitation whipped topping evenly over the pudding layer.
  • Spread the remaining cherry pie filling over the top of the whipped topping or center it on the cake for some decorative flair.
  • Place the cake in the refrigerator and chill until all the flavors meld together, about 4-5 hours.
  • Sprinkle the cake with the almonds, slice, and serve.
