Recipe Background

Dirt Pie combines rich chocolate layers with creamy and crunchy textures, perfect for sharing.
Dirt Pie offers a nostalgic journey with every bite. Its layers of decadent chocolate delight are both simple and satisfying, evoking the unmistakable charm of childhood treats. As you handle the components, the aroma of warm fudge and chocolate cake warms the kitchen—filling the air with an irresistible richness that promises something special. Each layer adds its texture, from the creamy pudding to the light, airy whipped topping, culminating in the irresistible crunch of crushed Oreos.
The joy in crafting Dirt Pie lies in its carefree assembly. A key technique ensures flavor distribution—poke generous holes in the warm cake to let the fudge soak through each bite. This simple step transforms the base into a moist, indulgent sponge of chocolate. As the cake cools, these pockets of goodness mingle with the pudding, creating a harmonious blend of taste and texture.
Perfect for sharing, this dessert becomes a centerpiece of connection. Whether around a family table or at a casual potluck, its playful presentation and rich flavors invite smiles and discussions. Top with extra Oreos or unique toppings, giving each serving a personal touch. Refrigerate, slice, and enjoy the delightful contrast of each forkful—smooth, creamy, and just a hint crunchy. It's comfort food at its best, welcoming you to savor and share joy.

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate fudge cake mix plus
  • All the ingredients required according to package instructions
  • 1 (12.8 ounce) jar hot fudge
  • 2 (3.4 ounce) packages dark chocolate instant pudding mix
  • 2 1/2 cups cold milk divided in half
  • 1 (14.3 ounce) package Oreo cookies
  • 1 (8 ounce) tub of imitation whipped topping
  • additional hot fudge & Oreos to taste
  • optional toppings to taste

Directions

  • Make the cake batter according to package instructions.
  • Bake the cake in a 9x13 baking dish until a knife comes out clean from the center, about 22-28 minutes.
  • Allow it to cool for about 10 minutes.
  • Using the end of a wooden spoon or rubber spatula, poke holes in the top of the cake while it is still slightly warm.
  • Heat the jar of hot fudge in the microwave until it is smooth and can be stirred easily. Heat it in short increments to ensure it isn’t burned.
  • Pour the entire jar over the cake and allow it to soak in through the holes you created.
  • Let it rest until the cake is cooled.
  • Combine 1 of the pudding mixes with 1 3/4 cups of the cold milk.
  • Immediately pour the pudding mixture over the top of the cake, spreading evenly.
  • Put the cake into the refrigerator and allow the pudding to set for about 15 minutes.
  • Combine the second box of pudding mix with the remaining 1 3/4 cups of cold milk in a separate bowl.
  • Refrigerate until the pudding has been set.
  • Place 3/4 of the package of Oreos into a gallon-sized plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
  • Remove the set pudding in the bowl from the refrigerator and mix with the container of imitation whipped topping.
  • Add the crushed Oreos to the whipped topping mixture.
  • Spread the whipped topping mixture over the top of the cake, creating the “dirt” layer.
  • Top the cake with the remaining hot fudge, Oreos, and your favorite toppings.
  • Serve cold.
