Recipe Background

Beef Manhattan is a savory, layered dish of roast beef, gravy, and mashed potatoes on bread.
Dive into a Beef Manhattan and find a delightful contrast between tender, shredded roast beef and the comforting smoothness of mashed potatoes. The scent of onions softening in butter fills the kitchen, hinting at the hearty layers forming on your plate. Every bite offers a blend of rich gravy and savory beef, all generously smothering a base of soft white bread.
Don’t overlook boiling those potatoes just right. This ensures the perfect mash—the kind without lumps, eagerly soaking up the added butter and milk. Mixing the smooth potatoes with just enough seasoning enhances the overall balance of the dish, providing a creamy counterpoint to the hearty meat.

It's a cozy meal that brings warmth and a sense of nostalgia, ideal for casual gatherings or a comforting solo dinner at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter divided
  • 2 cups roast beef leftover and shredded
  • 1 (12-ounce) jar brown gravy
  • 2 medium potatoes cut up
  • milk or half-and-half to taste
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • 2-4 slices white bread

Directions

  • In a large skillet, over low heat, sauté the onions in 1 tablespoon of the butter until tender, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Stir the cooked beef into the onions and cover, letting it simmer, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the gravy to the meat mixture and mix thoroughly.
  • While the meat mixture is cooking, boil the potatoes, covered, in salted water, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Drain the water from the potatoes.
  • Mash the potatoes.
  • Stir the remaining butter and the milk into the potatoes, ensuring it is well blended and no lumps remain.
  • Season the mashed potatoes to taste with the salt and the pepper.
  • To plate, place 1 slice of the bread. Spoon the meat mixture over the bread and cover with the second slice. Add a spoonful of the mashed potatoes on top of the second piece of bread. Cover with more of the meat mixture, to taste.
  • Serve.
