Recipe Background

Angel French Toast transforms angel food cake into a light, airy delight with hints of cinnamon and vanilla, complemented by cream cheese and strawberry syrup.
Angel French Toast greets you with the gentle aroma of vanilla and cinnamon wafting through the kitchen like a soft morning breeze. The fragrance itself promises a delightful experience—a hint of comfort wrapped in a promise of something sweet to come. As you prepare this dish, you might ponder the genius of using airy angel food cake as the base, a surprisingly light alternative to traditional bread that makes each bite delicate yet indulgent. With minimal effort required, it's the kind of meal that feels fancy enough for a special brunch but simple enough to whip up before your coffee's ready.
The first bite offers a delicate balance between the crisp, toasted exterior and the fluffy, melting interior. A layer of cream cheese adds a creamy contrast, blending beautifully with the sweet and tart notes of the strawberry syrup. It's not about overwhelming the senses but rather teasing them, with nutmeg playing a subtle supporting role that elevates rather than overpowers. And there's no breakfast drama here—putting this dish together is straightforward, making it ideal for sleepy mornings when counting steps isn't an option. Whether shared with loved ones or savored in solitude, its charm lies in its simplicity and the way it subtly transforms a classic indulgence into something ethereal. So grab a fork, and let the experience delight both your heart and your tastebuds.

Ingredients

For the French toast:

  • 4 eggs whisked
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • nutmeg to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter divided
  • 1 (7-inch) store-bought angel food cake sliced into 12-14 slices

Optional, for serving:

  • cream cheese to taste, softened
  • 1 cup strawberry syrup
  • powdered sugar to taste

Directions

  • In a shallow dish, combine the eggs, the milk, the vanilla, the cinnamon, and the nutmeg.
  • In a large nonstick skillet, over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter.
  • Dip 1/2 of the angel food cake slices into the egg mixture, resting for a few seconds on each side.
  • Add the coated slices to the heated skillet and cook until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Melt the remaining butter in the same skillet and repeat with the remaining slices of angel food cake.
  • Spread the cream cheese on the cooked slices, and top with the strawberry syrup and the powdered sugar.
  • Serve.
