Recipe Background
Sweet Croissant Bake combines fluffy croissants, fresh berries, and aromatic spices.
Sweet Croissant Bake brings together the plush texture of croissants and the burst of fresh berries, creating a delightful contrast in every bite. As this dish bakes, the kitchen fills with the warm, comforting aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg. The custard, infused with vanilla and orange, soaks the croissant pieces, transforming them into a rich, pudding-like layer. Enhancing this, the technique of toasting the croissants beforehand ensures they maintain a delightful crispness, even when soaked in the custard base.
Serving this bake invites a joyous gathering, as its golden top emerges from the oven, puffed and fragrant. The tartness of the berries mingles perfectly with the sweet, creamy undertones of the custard. Maple syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar at the table allows everyone to tailor their piece to personal preference. Whether shared as a weekend breakfast or highlighted in a festive brunch, this dish easily becomes the centerpiece of any gathering.
Resting the bake for a few minutes before slicing allows cleaner portions and lets the flavors settle. Each slice reveals layers of fruit and custard that are both visually and palatably satisfying. This bake brings an effortless elegance to the table — ideal for both a leisurely morning and grand celebrations.
Ingredients
- 6 large croissants cut into 2-inch pieces
- 3 cups fresh berries such as raspberries and blueberries
- 8 large eggs
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups low-fat or whole milk
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- powdered sugar optional, to taste, for serving
- maple syrup optional, to taste, for serving
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Arrange the croissant pieces on a large rimmed baking sheet.
- Toast the croissant pieces for 3-4 minutes.
- Place the toasted croissant pieces in the prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle the berries over the top of the croissant pieces.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, the granulated sugar, the cinnamon, the nutmeg, and the salt until blended.
- Stir the milk, the orange juice, and the vanilla into the egg mixture.
- Pour the liquid mixture over the croissant-berry mixture.
- Allow the casserole to sit on the counter until the croissant pieces absorb some of the liquid and soften, about 30 minutes. Press down on the croissant pieces as they soften to submerge them.
- Adjust the oven temperature to 350 degrees F.
- Bake, adding a loose cover of foil on top after the first 25 minutes to prevent excessive browning, until the casserole is puffed, golden-brown, and the center is set, about 60-70 minutes. Use a knife to test the center; it should come out clean.
- Let the casserole rest for at least 10 minutes.
- Slice and serve topped with the powdered sugar and the maple syrup.
